With its success and devoted followers for over seven decades in Japan, anime has grown to collect great audiences in the US and Europe. Many of the films now distributed internationally, were originally TV series produced and screened on Japanese TV, later serialised or re-arranged into film format for projection in movie-theatres. The genre contains hundreds of titles which are suitable for children, teen-agers and adults, with sub-genres covering drama, comedy, sci-fi, romance, rom-com, fantasy etc. Some of the films tackle major contemporary social and cultural issues, raising awareness to different specific problems, while others delve into the past, float to extraterrestrial territories, or aim to mainly intertain.

Animation is a unique form of art, since it marries hand-painted images with hi-tech computerised sequences, to become a painted series of millions of frames (12-24 frames per second), that manifest a unique quality of combined talents of painting, storytelling, music and digital skills. Apart from the great and famous studios, there have always been anime artists who acted on alternative channels with alternative stories and techniques. Their work is rarely shown or distributed through the commercial channels, and it will be one of the focal points of the series to be screened at Stanford.

The series of films that will be screening at Stanford, aims at a more careful and detailed understanding of this genre, its place within Japanese culture, and its role in shaping concepts, idea and behaviours, as well as aesthetic qualities. The group anime films on show at Stanford, consider the topic of cultural representation across time, showing film that have strong visual quality and a complex story of human relationship, time leaps, and social matters.
This series is designed to outreach a wider public, by introducing different aspects of Japanese culture and art, and their display in anime.

To make a more accurate and topic centres choice, I have decided to take film that look into the question of how do anime film represent foreign cultures and sub-cultures in Japan.
